Erotic Art History

So the other day I got to wondering, how far back does erotic art go?  Which artists in history produced erotic artworks.  I’m sure that this sort of stuff goes back a long way.  I mean, before you could get porn on just about every device out there, if you had a hankering for erotic pictures… someone had to draw them.  Until someone invented the photograph that is.  I wonder how erotic works where viewed way back when.  What was considered a tasteful nude and what was just plain ol’ smut.  What was smut called back then?

I’m going to look in to these erotic artists during history.  I want to know more about them and I’m going to share my findings here.  Once a month (starting in Feb) I’ll be making a post showcasing an artist and some of their works.  I’m very much looking forward to this to be honest.  I think it’ll be fun to learn about this naughty passion that I have and see where it’s been though out history.

I believe the oldest known depiction of human form is from somewhere between 35-40,000 years ago. The Venus of Hohle Fels specifically.

If you’re looking for more of the drawn variety you may want to watch Cave of Forgotten Dreams, on Netflix. It mostly deals with various archeological finds found within a specific area, but for a brief period it is concerned with what may be the first drawn depiction of a nude woman, while the Venus of Hohle Fels is the first known depiction of any type. Most importantly it is narrated by Werner Herzog.

I’m looking forward to see your findings. 🙂 I’ve read a book about the history of pornography, but it was mainly focused on my country.

The ancient Egyptians used to put dirty pictures in some of their hieroglyphics. And the Romans, sheesh! The city of Pompeii, when they dug it up, was festooned with erotic art. No wonder, as Pompeii was pretty much a city of brothels.

I knew the Romans were kinky, the Egyptians were dirty and I don’t even want to talk about the Renaissance era… but I never really knew any of the artists, so I too am looking forward to this.
