Bad Tipper

I’m a bad tipper.  I always let my wife decide how much to leave when it’s time to tip.  I’ll leave nothing and not feel bad about that.  It’s not because I thought my server was bad, I just don’t feel like I need to leave a tip.  I know that servers make less then minimum wage and that they live off of tips, I understand all of that.  And I know that if I was in that situation I would want people to leave me tips for a job well done.  But even after all of that… I still don’t like the “you have to leave a tip” attitude that people give me.  No, I don’t…  Does that make me a jerk?  I am getting better with tipping.  I don’t always tip as much as I should, which is why I let my wife take care of that.  I have no problems with the tips she leaves, I just couldn’t do it myself.

Are you a good tipper?

i leave 5 bucks, no matter what the meal cost. it could have been Chili’s, or it could be Steak and Shake, completely different prices, but i still just give 5 bucks

Ugh, tipping – between that and having to add tax onto the price of everything you buy, I can’t ever see myself moving over to the US.

I’ll happily stay in Australia where the price you see is the final price you pay, and you don’t feel have to feel guilty about it as the servers are paid a decent minimum wage. Just a lot simpler to deal with.

Of course, I’m a cheap bastard who is too cheap to eat out aside from the occasional fast food anyway.

I always tip. Figure, since the waitstaff doesn’t get paid minimum wage, it’s just a part of the price. I usually give ~15% before tax, more if the service was exceptional. That said, I HATE that tipping is expected. Seems to me that everyone should get (at least) minimum wage, and tips should be rewards for great service. Given the system in place, unless the service is horrible, I can’t in good conscience not leave a tip. Funny thing is, you’d think that in a tipping society service would be better, but I’ve found that the service is almost always better in non-tipping societies.

I tip when the server is polite, funny, or goes the extra step to be accommodating.

If they did a good service, then it never hurts to leave a little extra as a thank you (10% for average, and 15% for above-and-beyond).

If however they pull a “pissy entitled you HAVE to leave a tip” attitude, then they just blew it and they get NOTHING! They lose! Good DAY, sir!
