Dancing eyes cancelled

Way back in 2008, post #262.  I did up a review of an adult Mame game called Dancing Eyes.  It’s this crazy puzzle game where you run this little monkey character around this grid on the clothing of an anime chick.  If you’re able to make a circle back to your starting point and make a box, the clothing there will disappear and revel some of her under garments.  Oh, and don’t forget to avoid enemies because they will end your game real quick.  You can read my full review here.

Anyway, Namco had plans to remake this game for the PS3 and involve the PlayStation Move controls too.  I say had plans because the game just got canned.  Not sure why, all I know is that all that’s left are screen shots.  Never to be played, except in Mame form.  The game was actually canceled once before, but then came back to life… only to be crushed again.

Check out some screens that I found around and decide for yourself if it was a game you would have been interested in playing.

Disappointing. Wonder if it was cancelled due to its subject matter, or for other reasons. Also, does that device (controller?) in one of the screen shots look like a ‘magic wand’ massager to anyone else? Might have added an interesting twist to the game.

This reminds me of a game I played when I was younger. My dad used to take me into the city and drop me off at a video arcade (do they still exist) from time to time. I remember going into Pinball Pete’s one time and there was a game called Gal Panic. It was a puzzle type game in which you had to uncover the background picture by completely surrounding areas of the screen. The background pictures were usually some Japanese model, but they occasionally were something else (possibly undesirable). Each new round found the model with less clothing, until she was topless (a little extra motivation). I recall playing it one time, and a guy walks by and asks me if I’m old enough to be playing it (I think I was 12 or so). Don’t remember what I said, but I kept on playing. Spent almost all of my time and money playing that game. Still have fond memories of it. There was something awesome about being a kid in an arcade aimed at adults (it was terribly smoky) in a basement. The sights, the sounds, the smells of a late 80s, early 90s arcade are hard to beat in my book.

I totally know the game you’re talking about. I never saw it in an arcade and only first heard about it in college. A friend got me hooked on Mame emulation and that was one he showed me. He remembers playing it at a Mini Golf place when he was a kid, only the volume was turned up so high that the whole building could hear the game say “GOOD LUCK!!” when you plopped in a quarter. There’s actually a whole series of games based off that license. They got away from the model pictures and got in to anime girls later on. I should do a review of the series now that I think of it. ^_^

I had no idea that they made more than one game. Always though it was a one-shot anomaly. Bit ashamed to admit this, but you mentioning that there is a whole series prompted me to do some research. I watched a full play-through of GP SU on youtube (naughty bits blocked out) while I cleaned the apartment. It was a blast (probably partially a nostalgia thing). The play was slightly different than I remember, but it was still the game from my youth at its core. I think I may have to look into this Mame emulation…. Well, whenever I get a chunk of free time, that is.
