Heavy Metal

A few weeks ago I was going through a box of my old crap and I came across my old Heavy Metal magazines.  I totally thought I had thrown them away or recycled them when I moved away to college.  Finding these brought back a lot of memories.

The year was 1994, I was 17 and had just made an awesome discovery down at the local book store.  In with the science fiction and fantasy magazines, on the lower shelf, I found this magazine called Heavy Metal.  Truth be told I’d seen the magazine sitting there lots of times before but never thought to pick it up since I thought it was a music magazine.  I was totally wrong.  For what ever reason that day I picked it up and was happily surprised to see illustrated nudity and sex.  Never had I thought that I would find something so up my alley as this… on the lower shelf of a book store no the less! Inside I found a whole world of erotic cartoons like Cherry Poptart and Omaha the Cat Dancer through the adds alone.

I only ever bought three issues.  I read the stories and checked out the art.  Both where okay, but rarely stellar.  But still, this was probably my first discovery that adult cartoons/comics actually existed and as strange as it might sound, I was hooked.  I mean, I was hooked before, but that was because I was drawing my own stuff.  This was different and I could even say that I became a little obsessed with trying to find some of these actual comics.  Saddly, that wouldn’t happen until college.  Still, I believe  it was because of Heavy Metal that the spark of erotic art was lit with in me.

I wonder, do they still print Heavy Metal?  Is it any good or has it stayed pretty much the same?

The pre-Laird Heavy Metals are a classic.

Its still in print as far I know. Haven’t read one in a long time. Thats where I discovered Omaha and Cherry Poptart too. Pretty much my introduction to erotic and adult comics.

I wish I had known about these when I was younger. I kind of had to wait for an internet connection before I found much outside of my own drawings.

Never read Heavy Metal, but was always interested in it. I did read the Cherry series, though. It is my favorite western adult comic, both for its themes and its fuck-you-it’s-my-first-amendment-right-to-produce-this attitude. Also, I love the fact that Neil Gaiman wrote one of the episodes. It is one of the few pieces of adult art that I would buy physical copies of, if I could find a complete collection.

I’ve never read the magazine, though I used to see it all the time in a book and magazine store I used to frequent.

Actually now that I think about it I’m ure I’ve downloaded a few scanned comics from the magazine a few years back so I have actually seen some it them.

I do own the movie on Blu-ray though! A Classic, and probably the first time I saw an animated movie with nudity when I caught it on TV late one night when I was probably much to young to be watching it! 😉

I saw the original at a friends house. It’s totally a classic. I saw the sequel at a theater double bill. It was… umm… well… I think it’s better not to talk about it and just remember the first one.

Exactly. I was so excited to hear they were making another one, I was following it’s progress for about a year, then I saw it and was highly disappointed.

I’ve recently heard rumours that they are going to possibly maybe make another one, this time another anthology. But I’m not holding my breath.
