Single Vacations vs. Couple Vacations

I often bring up the topic of vacations with my single friends and why they don’t take more of them.  Usually by the end of the year they still have the majority of their vacation days to book off because they didn’t use them during the year.  Then I have to listen to them talk about how it’s a pain to take the time off.  That totally floors me!  I always ask why they don’t take more vacations to see different places.  They don’t have to go around the world, but just to see what our own country might have to offer.  I mean, if they’re single then their vacations are going to be way cheaper then the ones I go on.  There are four members to my family.  Imagine how big my vacation bill gets.  In my head, they should be taking this great opportunity to do some traveling.

There response to all that is… traveling by yourself doesn’t sound like much fun.  Plus even if it is cheaper for them to travel, they still might not have the cash to do so.  I can totally understand that.  It would be better to travel and share those experiences with someone and not everyone has travel cash.  We all have bills to pay.  Still, I think if it where me I would go and see some places.  But then I forget that this is married me talking.  I’m looking at it from a skewed view point.  If I’d always been single, I might feel the same way they do.  I do hope that single me would pick up a ticket and see the world.  I guess I’ll never know.

If you’re single would you ever consider going on a vacation by yourself?

Single vacation = taking a scheduled week or two off of work to play the latest major game release.

Then again, I’m not the travel sort of person in the first place – the only time I’ve ever went away on holiday has always been with other family members, going more for the experience with them, rather than for where we’re going.

In the same vein, if I ever go off on a big overseas trip, it’ll be primarily to see friends that I’ve met online, rather than for where they live.

My single vacation wouldn’t really be a vacation, but more like an extended road trip. If money were no object, I’d like to take a journey across America. Not just to see big cities and well known sites, but small towns, main streets, out of way places that hold a sense of the past. I would like to visit Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where an ancestor of mine died in the US civil war. And Kings Mountain, South Carolina where another ancestor fought in the Revolutionary War. I’d also like to go to fly over to Scotland and visit the family castle in Sorbie. I have a lot of wanderlust in me I just need to get out.

When I was single, I took all sorts of vacations. My family lives all over the place, so visiting them was a great excuse to see other places. For example, I’d visit my sister wherever she lived (East coast, West coast, later Europe) and would take a couple of weeks to travel around the area. I’d also travel to places that I wanted to see, even if I didn’t know anyone in the area. This is actually how I met my wife. We were staying at the same youth hostel and went out for a very late night of dining, drinking, and karaoke with a couple of other travelers.

I loved to travel by myself. There is something liberating about being able to do exactly what you want to do without worrying about someone else. For instance, I highly doubt many of my friends would feel comfortable hanging out in a game center/porn shop in the middle of Akihabara at night (It was the only place I could find that was open, and was almost exclusively populated by businessmen. I think I have a picture somewhere.). Or some random rock festival with a bunch of bands that I neither understood, nor heard of (some of them were awesome, though).

Oddly, now that I am married, I take way fewer vacations. Even though it’s just the two of us, the cost of travel has increased significantly recently, and we tend to be fairly thrifty. I think we have one major vacation coming up, but we haven’t yet decided what we want to do with it. Someplace with a beach and good swimming water, I think.
